To achieve any type of success for the new year all girls must set goals. It's exciting to buy into all the hype during January then come February your list gets thrown to the side. It's difficult to plan for the entire year because you never know what the year may bring. How do you eat dinner? In small bites right? That's exactly how you should handle the new year, in small bites. I've found that the best way to set goals is by the quarter. There are four quarters in the year.
- Quarter 1: January, February, March
- Quarter 2: April, May, June
- Quarter 3: July, August, September
- Quarter 4: October, November, December
December is the time to plan for Quarter 1 (January, February, and March).
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- What do you hope to accomplish?
- How can you accomplish that?
- What are you missing? How can you get access to the things you're missing?
- What people need to know about these goals to make sure you achieve them?
- What resources do you need to achieve them?
- When do you need these resources?
I like to further break down my goals into categories to make sure I'm keeping balance in my life.
Here are my categories (Feel free to create your own or add to the list):
- Home Life
- School
- Business/Work
- Relationships
- Spiritual
- Social/Friends
By setting a goal in each category I can make sure I'm not committing too much time to one particular area of my life (doing so REALLY causes stress).
Your complete goals should look something like this:
January-Social/Friends
Goal: Make more business friends in Atlanta
Plan of Action: Attend one event for Howard Alumni Association and Black MBA Association.
Tasks:
- Research Events calendar for each organization and register myself for the events.
- Make sure I have appropriate attire to stand out at these events.
- Order extra business cards to pass out my contact information at each event.
If you have a deadline add it onto your list too.
