These are two pieces of wisdom that were passed on to me from my parents and I wanted to share them:
Take your schooling seriously: Let’s face it - in today’s world, there are a tremendous variety of things that demand your time and energy: friends, family, social life, hobbies, clubs, sports, and of course the constant presence of the internet and electronic media. Although surfing the internet, watching the latest episode of your favorite reality show on TV or updating your Facebook status is much more fun than studying for your algebra test or writing that research paper, you have to keep your priorities in line. It is easy to let homework and studying fall off the radar when there are so many other activities grabbing your attention. Keep your eye on the prize and take your education very seriously. Everything you learn no matter how small it may seem, is preparing you for the “real world.”
In college, it isn’t too difficult to completely derail if you aren’t careful. No one is telling you what to do and suddenly you are the master of your own domain. Your life is in your own hands and this can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you handle it. Be disciplined and don’t let the outside distractions throw you off your game - again keep your eyes on the prize and remain true to yourself and your goals. Skipping that early morning class to stay in bed sounds appealing at the time, but you are paying good money to be a part of the experience so take as much out of it as you can. Don’t let your hard work be in vain! You can’t accomplish your dreams without knowing how to prepare for the journey.
Never stop learning: I have always loved to read. As a child, I lived in a small town and we didn’t have any bookstores, however we made weekly stops at the local library where I would load up as many books as I could carry in my arms and then spend hours reading. In school, a trip to the library was the highlight of my day! Sometimes my parents would take us to the bookstore in a town located about an hour away. As a treat, I would be allowed to choose one or two books to add to my collection and I would agonize over which I wanted to take home. I love how I could enter into a new and different world, just by the simple flick of a page.
As an adult, I still love the printed word and I always have at least one book on my nightstand or downloaded on my E-Reader (yes, I love real books and my E-books equally). When I want to understand something, I find a book or article and then spend some time educating myself. I try to read one or two newspapers a day to stay up on the ever changing state of our world. Read to keep your mind fresh, whether it is the latest best seller or an article in a magazine. You’ll take something away with you no matter what your choice of topic.

I am a vegetarian, musician, reader, writer, jewelry designer, tea drinker and power walker. I am on a first name basis with the staff at my local Barnes and Noble and I spend most Saturdays in the cafe there reading away the hours with a huge cup of coffee. I am obsessed with flowers and I have amassed quite a collection of flower themed jewelry. I love walking and I have completed four half marathons. I am hoping to have some of my writing published soon :) |
